How Big is a Double Carport?

Most of the double carports we build in Perth are between 5.4 and 6.0 metres wide and 5.4 to 6.0 metres deep. That gives two standard cars enough room to park side by side and open their doors comfortably.

Because every carport is custom-made, we can size yours to suit your block, multiple vehicles and any setback rules from your shire. If you drive a dual-cab ute or four-wheel drive, or want room for bikes and storage, we will allow extra width, depth or height during the free measure and quote.

Council Planning Permission and Approvals for Double Carports

We seek full shire approval for every carport we build. In Western Australia, a carport is a structure under the WA Building Act, so your local council or shire will need to see a site plan, elevations and structural engineering before issuing a permit. Building without one can lead to fines, orders to remove the structure and problems when you sell.

How long do approvals take?

Approval times depend on your shire and whether planning approval is also needed. On average, approvals take around 100 days. We’ll keep you updated at every stage, so you always know where your application is up to.

1. Free measure and quote. We visit your home, measure up and talk through your vehicles, style and budget. You’ll have a formal quote within three days.

Double Carport FAQs

How much does a double carport cost in Perth?

The cost depends on size, roof style, roofing material and site conditions. Because every carport we build is custom, the best way to get an accurate price is a free measure and quote. We will give you a formal quote within three days.

Do I need development approval for my carport?

Often not, but it depends. A building permit is always required, but development (planning) approval is only needed if the carport doesn’t meet the R-Codes and your council’s local planning policy. 

For example, you may need approval if the carport:

• Doesn’t meet the street or side setbacks for your zoning

• Blocks the view between the house and the street

• Is wider than your council allows 

• Is on a heritage-listed property

How long does installation take?

A double carport usually takes around 2 days to install. Site conditions such as access, slope and ground type can add time, so most jobs are finished within 2 to 3 days. Installation starts once your shire approval is granted and your carport has been manufactured. We’ll confirm the timeframe for your job when we quote. 

Can a double carport be attached to my house?

Yes. We build both attached and freestanding double carports. Attaching to your home often creates a seamless look and covered access to your front door.

Are metal double carports better than timber?

For Perth conditions, steel is hard to beat. Metal double carports made from COLORBOND® steel will not rot, warp or attract termites, and they need very little maintenance.

Can I use my carport as an outdoor entertaining area?

Absolutely. Many customers use their double carport for parties, kids' play space or weekend BBQs. Adding SolarSpan® insulated panels keeps the area cooler in summer.

Can I add a roller door to my carport?

We build every carport strictly to our engineering, so we can’t modify the structure to suit doors or other third-party installations after the fact. If you’re planning to add a roller door, let us know at the quote stage. We’ll do our best to design your carport so it can accommodate the door you have in mind, but we cannot redesign structural elements to suit the wide variety of doors on the market.
